This is a lovely representation of Guru Rinpoche Padmasambhava sitting on a lotus disk, holding a vajra of compassionate love in his right hand and the yogi's skull-bowl of clear wisdom in his left. He has the trident-staff (khatvanga) of a wandering Yogi, and wears on his head a jeweled crown.
Padmasambhava (蓮花生大士) whose name means "born of the lotus" was an 8th-century master of Buddhist tantra who is credited with bringing Vajrayana Buddhism to Tibet, Bhutan and neighboring countries in. In those lands, he is better known as Guru Rinpoche (literally "Precious Guru") where followers of the Nyingma School which he founded, regard him as the second Buddha. Revered today as one of the great patriarchs of Tibetan Buddhism, he is depicted as the embodiment of the Dharmakaya in Tibetan iconography.
